Off Screen : Non-acting projects- On writing he's toying with
- Can you talk about your experience writing the Spike and Dru comic book?
- Any interest in doing a novel on your own?
- (7-02 Shoreleave) I never even thought about a novel. I don’t know about novel structure frankly. I’m much better at dramatic structure. You know what I'm doing right now actually? I'm sending Joss ideas and scripts for Firefly. Laughs. He's not gonna take any of them, but we were talking about it. He had come over to my place and we were talking about it and he's describing the series and I said, "you're doing Hill Street Blues in space" and he said, "EXACTLY!! That's it!" It's 180 degrees from StarTrek. It is not about who we want to be,which is an admirable thing to talk about, which is always pointing away from what we love about Stat Trek, but it's equally interesting to turn it on its head and talk about who we really are, which is a pretty messed up species, still and so...uh, I don't know if I should say this, but Joss has a really bad ass actor. We get together and do Shakespeare and his Hamlet is incredible, his Iago is the best I've ever seen, and he wanted a small part in the show and the people at Fox didn't want to let him do it.And I was like, "would you just give me the phone number of the guy at Fox and let me tell him what I know and don't know about casting, and why I know you're a great actor and why you should be on the show if you wanna be, and the fact that you'd never do anything out of ego; that the reason you want to be an actor is the same reason you wanted to write the musical - not for the fact that you wanted applause, but because you can DO it. You have something to offer." But he wanted to play the little squiggly guy? You know? Like, (makes squeaky noise) enh enh enh enh. And I'm like "Joss, what are you doing? You want to kill your career before you even start. If you want to play something, then play something like THIS" - and then I give him 18 pages of what I wrote - a cool guy, really dangerous but everyone like busts on him for his religion, for his hair, for his family life and no one takes him seriously when in fact he's the most powerful, dangerous person on the whole show. That was fun..I did it just for my own kind of edification - actually, I got a computer up in my room right now working on another script about basically thinking that that one thing is gonna happen and finding out that you are absolutely wrong about the planet, about everything that you completely ignoring and screwing it up. I think that's cool. And if Joss uses it, it's gonna be completely unrecognizable. Laughs. That's how good writer's work. No, I dunno, it's just fun.
